Getting Started with Take One Book

This course is recommended for schools that are about to start or have recently started using Take One Book.
The course comprises 6 short modules which explain the Take One Book Pedagogy.
We start with an introduction to Take One Book and explain the 4 strands of research which informed the development of our pedagogic approach. We call these the 4 pillars of Take One Book. Subsequent modules mode through the different stages of the teaching sequence with an explanation of the principles and exemplification of some of the strategies that might be employed at that stage.

We recommend that this course is followed by our Reading Comprehension training, which provides a more in-depth explanation of reading strategies plus exemplification, including videos of teaching and learning in school.

This course is suitable for school leaders, teachers and learning support assistants working in schools that subscribe to Take One Book.
Infant, junior and primary schools, KS1 and KS2,
Take One Book does not cover EYFS.
At the end of this course you will:
- be familiar with the underpinning principles of Take One Book
- understand the reading phases in the Teach One Book sequences
- have knowledge of some of the teaching strategies used in the teaching sequences
- appreciate the importance of high-quality dialogue for the success of Take One Book

The cost for this training is for a school. All teachers and learning support in your school may have access to the training.
The training is available for 12 weeks to allow time for you to work through the modules at your pace and revisit them.

The Importance of Text Potential
This module explains the importance of thinking through the potential of the text with your pupils in mind. Spending time getting to know the text well saves preparation time and enables teachers to be more responsive to the children’s ideas and questions.
Module 3 with Nikki Gamble, Jo Castro
Hook and Orientation
This module details what we need to do before reading a new book, distinguishing between piquing children’s interesting and addressing any key areas of learning that the children will need to cover before they can access the text.
Module 4 with Nikki Gamble, Jo Castro
In the First Encounters stage, we establish literal understanding and identify any important misconceptions.
Module 5 with Nikki Gamble, Jo Castro
Digging Deeper is all about building on the initial reading to deepen understanding. This is the time to do more in-depth language study, teach grammar in context and invite elaborative inferences.

Review and Reflect
This video loots at the learning that takes place after reading. This is an opportunity to reflect on themes and ideas. It is also time to review the learning that has taken place over the course of reading the book.
